4A good solution to beaver babiesJul 14, 2010
By P. Carboni
We have a crib with a pretty wide rail that prevents most rail guards from fitting. After reading the horrible reviews about the ones that use adhesive or buckles to stay on the rail I went with this much simpler design.

I ordered it on Sunday, July 11, and received it on Tuesday, July 13. I did pay for 2nd day shipping, but I figured since I ordered on a non-business day that it would be today (Wednesday, July 14) before I received it...so I was pretty happy about the quick delivery.

The outer layer is the softer fleece. The layer that rests on the rail is a thin, plastic-like material that I suppose is to prevent saliva from soaking through to the wood. Between the two layers is some padding to add a little thickness to the covers.

THE GOOD:
1. Very easy to install (not sure if "install" is the right word, but it sounds professional).

2. The extra padding also doubles as a guard against head bumps.

3. Can fit a wide range of crib rail sizes.

THE BAD:
1. The ties are made of the same fleece material that the rest of the cover is made from. This makes them pretty stretchy which makes tying them tightly somewhat more difficult.

2. Because of the material of the ties, I could hear threads snapping everytime I stretched and tightened one. I was afraid that I was about to tear the tie from the cover.

3. There probably need to be four ties per cover instead of three. Our crib has a very wide vertical bar in the very middle of the front. Because of this it was very difficult to tie the middle tie. We had to really pull and stretch it to one side of that wide bar to tie the middle down.

WORD TO THE SEAMSTRESSES OUT THERE:
My mother-in-law is an incredible seamstress. She has made numerous outfits and blankets for our daughter, and had I thought about it I would have simply had her design and make a rail cover for us. It's a VERY simple design that wouldn't take an experienced seamstress much more than 30 minutes to duplicate for only a fraction of the cost. Just remember to sew in that waterproof layer on the back and add some padding between the front and back layers.

My son didn't get his teeth until he was 10 months old. I didn't no it until the rail started getting scratches on it. I thought oh well it's already ruined! Well I was wrong! It got much, much worse!!! He started taking the varnish of and leaving what looked to be bare wood showing. I purchased the rail covers and side covers and It has saved them from getting worse. I wish we would have gotten them a lot sooner! Now we will have to sand and re varnish the railing before we can use it for the foot board when we convert the crib to his bed (3 in one crib). I thought these were expensive to buy but I wish I would have known just how much damage a baby could do to a crib! Then I would have never thought they were too costly at all. $40 (For the whole crib) v/s a $1000.00 crib.... well worth the price. I was debating between the Velcro (Another brand) and this brand with the ties... so glad I went with the ties (I just knot them 3 or 4 times for safety) because he can now undo Velcro at a year old and we will be using these for a long time to come (He is still teething and LOVES to chew on his crib rail still along with everything else). I have washed them 4 or 5 times now and they look bran new still (Using instructions on the label). The only thing I don't like is that while tying them on the crib if I pull too tight I can hear the threads popping. I can't see any damage but I know it is the stitching breaking... Still I would buy these in a heartbeat again... they are wonderful, look great, saved my crib for getting any worse & Fit my extra long crib front and sides.

5Wish I Had Bought it SoonerApr 26, 2011

I love these rail guards. They look good and prevent my 10-month-old from chewing up the rails of his crib. :)
I read another review that said they slip out of place, but I have not experienced that. Also, my son can still pull himself up just the same as he could before I put the guards on.

4Love it....just a couple of thingsAug 02, 2011

Our 9mo old was destroying his crib by chewing on it. He was also banging his head, which I read is normal.

I love the material. Nice and soft, and lined with heavy waterproof lining. The width and length were short. I read that you can order XL, but I felt it would have been WAY too big. It fell just short of the corners, but our son is not chewing there, so it worked out fine. We had to tightly pull the guard to be able to secure it. I have a convertible crib with a wide front rail. I read this is a review too, but I was thinking of the spot that the baby chews on. Nope. The crib spaces begin about 1/4 of the way down, so we almost weren't able to tie them. The side ones worked great (Still short on the corners)

Well, my son does not spend his time chewing the crib almost instantly after we put the guards up. He quickly learned to lay himself back down (we were having to lay him down before we got the guards) and he is not banging his head!

Coincidence? Maybe. But I SWEAR by these guards.....they just need a little tweaking.

5Perfect solution! (new 5-tie design)Jul 23, 2011
By Gned "graduate"
Other reviews say the long bumper comes with only 3 ties. Mine came with 5 ties. Seems like the manufacturer took customer responses seriously and they improved their product. I installed these bumpers (both long and two short) and my daughter hasn't missed a beat. Still climbs up to standing position and chews on the bumper, but no more notches in the wood. Even provides an added benefit of a softer landing when she decides to fall on the rail instead of her butt. I'd recommend these to anyone who finds themself with a biter! These bumpers don't slip on the rail either becaues of how the ties thread when tied.
