I had high hopes for this play mat that it would serve its purpose and not be an eyesore. it looks very cute when put together. But unfortunately the first time I placed my son on the mat, he immediately started scratching at it and the hardwood colored coating on the mat flaked off. You could see the white foam underneath. I had to take him off of it and wipe the flakes from his hand before he ate them. I do not think this is a safe product. It may work for a toddler who would not scratch or pick at the mat, but why risk it. I'll be looking for a mat that does not have a coating on it.

We live in a small apartment and were looking for a set of mats for our 10 month old that would not add to the color chaos in our tiny living room. These get one star because they met that criteria. That, however, is where the praise for this product stops. Like another reviewer, I found that the 'wood' pattern was not part of the foam itself but instead, a thin veneer that easily flakes off. NOT SAFE! Also, they have a tendency to curl up at the edges and come apart. We were constantly taking everything off of the mats to reconnect the tile pieces. ANNOYING! At this point, we've wasted money on what seemed like a great option and now need to shop around for something safer and more reliable.

i was very skeptical about ordering after reading the negative reviews about how the top layer is so thin that it scratches off. NOT TRUE!!
the padding is all brown, the top side has the "wooden" effect. I've tried to scratch a small corner to see how bad it would be but i CANNOT scratch it off. maybe the manufacturer has made a significant improvement. I absolutely recommend this!
However it did smell a bit, just like anything new, nothing out of the ordinary. i just set it out in the sun to air out for about an hour and the smell was gone. Im very satisfied and even considering purchasing more as my infant becomes more active.

I love this tile, looks just the pic and still in good condition. We have had it in our daughters play room for over a year and it works just fine! No shedding like the other people have posted? Maybe they fixed the problem before I bought it?
The only thing is that you have to buy a large quantity to cover an good area.

It looks beautiful but my toddler likes to take it apart time and time again. And then the cats started using it for a scratching post which makes a huge mess. So if you don't have cats or a toddler who likes to take things apart, this might work for you but it didn't for me.
