5EXACTLY like you remember her!!!Jun 28, 2009
By Bunkster Brown
I got this as a gag gift for my sister, who carried this doll with her EVERYWHERE when she was a little girl (early 1970s, I think it was). Being eight years older, I remember every detail about my sister's doll... and this one is an exact replica, right down to the phrases she speaks. Even though these phrases were recorded by Cheryl Ladd, the voice sounds exactly like the original Mrs. Beasley doll.

There are a couple of things that a purchaser should be aware of, however. First... it says on the box, in bold print, "THIS IS NOT A TOY." So forget it, if you are buying this for a child to play with. It is intended ONLY as a collector's item. In fact, the first time I pulled the little ring to listen to her talk, it came right off the string. So it definitely does not meet today's safety standards and poses a choking hazard for small children. (I tied the ring back on the string with a triple knot, and it was good as new.)

Secondly, mine came in a damaged box, although there was no damage to the exterior box. It was obviously damaged in the warehouse, before it was ever shipped to me. Since it is a collector's item doll, it should be important to the buyer to receive it in a box that isn't damaged. I called the company and they are sending me another one. I returned the first one yesterday, at a return cost of over $[...] with insurance, which the seller promised to reimburse me for. Hopefully, the next one I receive will not be in a box that's damaged. If it is, I'll come back and edit this review with that info.

Lastly, the first doll I got (the one I returned) had a bit of an issue with the talking feature. She did not seem to talk every time I pulled the chord. This may have been because the previous phrase was not completed, I don't know. But you seemed to have to pause slightly between pulls in order to get the speaking to work properly. Which...as I recall...happened with the original Mrs. Beasley too. So maybe this flaw was intentional, I don't know. Hopefully it is not something that will get worse over time... but again... as I recall, my sister's Mrs. Beasley doll in the 70s eventually did stop talking. :) So it's all good, I guess.

Update 7/6/09 ~ Got the second one, and the box is perfect. The ring didn't come off in my hand this time, and the speaking works perfectly every time. I must've received a dud the first time.

I must say that Closeoutzone was a little rough to deal with on issuing the refund they promised me. They didn't reimburse me at first for the return shipping, and when I called them the woman (Patricia) I spoke with was rude to me. Her explanation of the refund made no mathematical sense... and she said I'd receive a partial refund on my credit card and the balance 72 cents would be refunded to me via check. Later I was contacted via email by someone else (Tami), and was told that part of my refund would be credited back to American Express, and the rest to PayPal. Since I don't use PayPal, this was amusing. It seems that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing at that company. Anyway, I finally did receive a complete refund as originally promised, but I sure had to work hard to get it. It almost wasn't worth all my time to get the measley $[...] back. I think all together I spent about 45 minutes trying to get that amount back. If easy returns are important to you (as they are to me), then steer clear.

Just like I remember! Mrs. Beasley is still a good friend and comfort.... I purchased her for a good friend of mine that missed the one she once had as a child. She was delighted, this Mrs. Beasley has found a good home!
